First and foremost, we would absolutely love to continue hosting Quqi this upcoming school year.
She has been a pleasure to have in our home. It took some time adjusting for all of us because her experience in my home has been different than anywhere else. We live a very active life, yet are very busy with work and we have a big family. She has had to learn to become a part of this big family and it took some time getting used to. She was used to living a life with just a few people at home, her being the only child. Well in my house, although she was the only international student, she now has American brothers and sisters. Not only, but she’s met so many people from my family, during the holidays and different events we’ve had through out the year. I have a total of 7 siblings and she’s met 6, My house is usually the house where all the kids in the family want to go, and so she’s become familiar with some of the nephews and nieces. She has even held my new born niece who was born right before Christmas. Sure, there were times where she may have felt overwhelmed or we maybe had to problem solve, but we’ve worked through anything that may have bothered her. We have had many great conversations, we respect her privacy when she just wants to be alone and quite, but I believe she appreciates what my family have to offer. She has become my Chinese daughter, in which I told her that no matter where she goes in the future, she will always have a place in my heart and I pray for her, as I pray for my kids. I truly love Quqi, we all do. We will miss her this summer.
See list of activities below we’ve done together, or that Quqi has done on her own:
-Introduced Quqi to some of our friends at a block party for my neighborhood, where the streets were closed down, and the street were filled with tables, games, etc.
-Great adventure about 3 times (twice with us and once with school)-we bought her a season pass as a welcome gift. Quqi was brave to go on all the roller coasters
-We’ve cooked together, when I have attempted to make Chinese food. (I asked her to bring back her grandmother’s recipes so we can try)
-Thanksgiving with the family
-many dinner outings with the family
- several dinner outings for one on one time, just her and I alone
-She joined the swimming team at school, which involved lots of practice and swimming matches
-Celebrated Christmas with our family and extended family, she received gifts from not just me, but my mom, my mother-in-law, my brothers, and all other adults. My extended family loves Quqi and they wanted to make sure they showed her.
-New Years Eve with the family (This includes the 2 weeks my mother and sisters came to visit from Florida. My sisters are teenagers like Quqi and they got along great)
-Quqi has spent time with her friends, either has gone to their home, attended birthday parties, or has gone shopping with her friends for some good socializing through out the year
-She has joined us at church, not every Sunday, but every once in a while
-We take walks around the neighborhood and talk, while walking the dog
-We’ve gone to the movie theater to watch some really nice inspirational movies that she loved. (one movie, she cried so much, when the movie was over, she hugged and thanked me for bringing her. movie was called Breakthrough)
-Movie nights at home next to the fire place
-Many barbecues at home
-Nice nights, we will make smores next to the firepit outside.
-She loves to jump on the trampoline with the girls (my daughter Isabella, my niece Janistie and our neighbor Emily, both are Quqi’s age)
-Hurricane Harbor Water Park (included with the Six Flags season pass) we went there for Memorial Day and enjoyed the time with my other sister from Florida, and some friends. They had such a great time getting on all the water rides.
-We had a going away dinner with our family and the Rivera family and since Quqi will not be with us on her birthday, we celebrated her birthday early
-This Sunday, we are taking her to Dutch Spring Lake, where we will be celebrating Father’s Day with some friends & family, barbecuing at the lake and they will enjoy the aqua park.
(I have many pictures that I have take throughout the year, I will send them through text message)
I may be missing a lot more that I cannot think of right at this moment. However, besides all the actives, we do together, we each have our own responsibilities. Work, school, studying, etc. We each our responsible for our own rooms, cleaning up after ourselves, cleaning our own rooms, washing our own clothes. I clean the house and the kids will help sometimes. I don’t expect them to do this for me, but my daughter especially helps and Quqi has helped me at times without me asking her. She spends a lot of time studying which has not only shows in her studies, but has also served to show my kids how important it is to study. To be honest, my kids do not realize how easy they have it knowing the language that they sometimes do not take advantage at the fact that studying the way Quqi does, can avoid getting a bad grade on an exam. We have helped her with her review and she has also offered to help my daughter with her math. She is very sweet and very appreciative.
My husband and I are so glad that we joined the program. We could have had any other child, but Quqi entered our home and we are truly happy with having her around and will always welcome her.
With that said, I know that having her will not last forever, but only until she graduates High School. Then we will open our home to a new student. We will know to expect a few challenges, but ultimately, with communications and setting the expectations up front, anything can be resolved. Your agency can count on us to continue being a part of this wonderful program. We don’t have a mansion, or a made, but any child that lives in our home, will not only be hosted by us, but will definitely gain some beneficial life lessons to prepare them on their journey to being an adult here in the US and learn from not just an american culture, but from other cultures as my family is multi-cultural, but we are first Christian and love everyone.
I will send the pictures through my phone.
Thank you again with this wonderful opportunity.
